National Workshop on Transforming Teacher Education Programme and National Professional Standards for Teachers

NCTE organized a two-day long national workshop in collaboration with NIEPA on the theme “Transforming Teacher Education Programme and National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) aligned with NEP 2020” at Indian National Science Academy, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Mandi House, Delhi on September 12 and 13.

This joint collaborative effort was aimed at building a strong network to prepare a stable plan of action for the NPST Guiding Document. NPST, as envisioned in Para 5.20 of NEP 2020, aims to enhance the professional development of teachers by providing clear expectations and guidelines for competency-wise improvement.

In the inaugural session of the workshop, the multilingual version NPST Guiding Document and NMM Bluebook were released in 14 Indian languages namely, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Tamil, Urdu, Maithili and Dogri. Moreover, e-resources for both NMM and NPST were also launched.

Padmashri Chamu Krishna Shastri, Chairman, Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti graced the occasion as the chief guest for this workshop, he underlined the importance of multilingualism for promoting equity and access in the Indian education system.

He applauded NCTE for this initiative to break linguistic barriers in the effective implementation of NEP 2020 mandates, and for wider dissemination of NMM & NPST in teacher education programs. Professor Pankaj Arora, Chairperson of NCTE delivered his address with a vision to ensure that the NCTE will continue to promote a multilingual approach to honor India’s diversity and inclusivity.

Kesang Y. Sherpa IRS, Member Secretary NCTE shared the roadmap of the workshop clarifying the goals and objectives of the workshop. She also emphasized that the assessment of the performance of teachers will be done through dedicated tools, peer reviews, etc. developed by NCTE. NIEPA Vice-Chancellor Professor Shashikala Wanjari expressed her appreciation for this joint collaborative effort to enrich professional standards for teacher education at the national level.

Six Parallel Thematic Sessions were conducted on both days to prepare tools to measure the competency of a teacher based on the NPST Guiding Document. In the technical session of the workshop, brainstorming group discussions were held followed by a presentation on various critical dimensions of tools and the integration of the unique facets of NPST with the National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) and ongoing Teacher Education Programmes.

The implementation plan of NPST and the role of different stakeholders in the successful implementation of NPST in States/UTs too were discussed. The event saw the participation of academic and research institutions, HEIs, CBSE, NVS, KVS, SCERT, DIET, Teacher Educators, School Principals, and School Teachers across the nation.
